As a parent myself and having met hundreds of Ward 1 parents, we all want our own children to be able to fulfill their highest potential, and we want our schools to be excellent facilitators of this. While there are many factors within schools and individual classrooms that make this challenging, there are also policy-level changes that could facilitate the individualization of education. One is called competency-based education (CBE), which means student learning that is organized and measured based on mastery of skills and knowledge over time. A few schools in DC are piloting CBE already. I am heading the subcommittee on the Board that will look into CBE. Should you have ideas about this, please add your comments here.
